(via the unworkable <a href=\"http:\/\/www.europarl.eu.int\/activities\/expert\/pv.do?language=EN  \">europarl<\/a> website)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dublin<\/strong><br \/>\nProinsias De Rossa (Lab- ESP)- For<br \/>\nMary Lou McDonald (SF- GUE\/NLG)- Against<br \/>\nGay Mitchell (FG-EPP)- Against<br \/>\nEoin Ryan (FF-UEN)- Abstained<\/p>\n<p><strong>East<\/strong><br \/>\nLiam Aylward (FF-UEN)- Abstained<br \/>\nAvril Doyle (FG-EPP)- Abstained<br \/>\nMairead McGuinness (FG-EPP)- Abstained<\/p>\n<p><strong>South<\/strong><br \/>\nSimon Coveney (FG-EPP)- Abstained<br \/>\nBrian Crowley (FF-UEN)- Abstained<br \/>\nKathy Sinnot (Ind-IDG)- Not Present<\/p>\n<p><strong>North West<\/strong><br \/>\nMarian Harkin (Ind-ALDE)- Against<br \/>\nJim Higgins (FF-UEN)- Abstained<br \/>\nSean O&#8217; Neachtain (FF-UEN)- Not Present<\/p>\n<p>So there you go. Labour&#8217;s MEP Proinsias De Rossa votes to bring in mass surveillance of internet usage, and to make challenges to our current law more complicated.<br \/>\nGay Mitchell voted against it, correctly breaking with the EPP grouping&#8217;s party line.<br \/>\nMary Lou McDonald also voted against, following her grouping&#8217;s party line.<br \/>\nMarian Harkin voted against and her grouping of Liberals was split, so credit to her for making the right decision. <\/p>\n<p>And then everyone else had no opinion on the introduction of mass surveillance of their constituents. An abstention is better than a vote in favour, I suppose. <\/p>\n<p>FF were clearly not willing to vote either way, as the government is in favour of the idea behind the directive, but has said it will sue over the method of bringing the law in. <\/p>\n<p>I was particularly surprised at Mairead McGuinness&#8217; vote, given the very helpful, friendly and intelligent discussions she had with me in the days leading up to the vote. <\/p>\n<p>But there you are. Votes are what count.
