{"id":165,"date":"2006-02-20T11:13:31","date_gmt":"2006-02-20T11:13:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.tuppenceworth.ie\/blog\/index.php\/2006\/02\/20\/my-blog-award-plan\/"},"modified":"2006-02-20T11:23:48","modified_gmt":"2006-02-20T11:23:48","slug":"my-blog-award-plan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.tuppenceworth.ie\/blog\/2006\/02\/20\/my-blog-award-plan\/","title":{"rendered":"My Blog Award Plan"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Irish Blog Awards shortlists have been <a href=\"http:\/\/awards.ie\/blogawards\/2006\/02\/20\/irish-blog-awards-short-list\/\">announced. <\/a><\/p>\n<p>Congratulations to one and all. <\/p>\n<p>However, congratulations also due to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mulley.net\">Damien Mulley<\/a>, who thought the shindig up and has done the runnning on it. Not just congratulations, I think. I think he&#8217;s also due a token of thanks. <\/p>\n<p>Ireland is a funny place. We don&#8217;t usually rush at strangers and embrace them as our friends. Go to any conference, gathering etc and you&#8217;ll see people in small clumps of two or three, talking to the people they already know and all looking out suspiciously at everyone else. <\/p>\n<p>These blog awards, along with the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.planetoftheblogs.com\">Planet of the Blogs<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.irishblogs.ie\">Irishblogs <\/a>aggregators, have done a great deal to turn lots of little island nations into some kind of coherent whole. Looking at the longlist, I have a flavour of what Ireland&#8217;s online community is like. <\/p>\n<p>Bonkers mostly. Well, ok, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fustar.org\/\">smart<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/twentymajor.blogspot.com\/\">funny<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sineadgleeson.com\/blog\/2006\/01\/03\/infertility-and-%e2%80%98anatomy-is-destiny%e2%80%99\/\">truthful<\/a>,<a href=\"http:\/\/www.tcal.net\/\">excited<\/a>, and bonkers. But it undoubtedly is a community now- in a way it wasn&#8217;t before. And that change is going to be important, in a way I can&#8217;t really put my finger on yet. I even like <a href=\"http:\/\/ricksbreakfastblog.blogspot.com\/\">Rick O&#8217;Shea<\/a> now, a task I would have thought beyond the power of even <a href=\"http:\/\/planetpotato.blogs.com\/planet_potato_an_irish_bl\/2006\/01\/mortal_ken.html\">Mortal Ken<\/a>.<br \/>\nDamien can take a great deal of the credit for all of that. <\/p>\n<p>So, simply, what I&#8217;m going to do when I&#8217;m going along for the night, is pay \u20ac10 instead of \u20ac5 at the door. If everyone does the same it will cover Damien&#8217;s hotel and travel costs, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mulley.net\/2006\/02\/16\/an-experiment-in-transparency\/\">as he outlined them here<\/a>. And if he has something left over he can buy himself a hat. Or some kind of talking orange.
