The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rte.ie\/radio\/mysterytrain\/index.html\">Mystery Train <\/a>is no more! It\u2019s like a death in the family, or the loss of an old friend. Really, I\u2019m in mourning. I listen to the show every evening as I make my dinner. I might as well just skip my evening meal altogether now that such a vital element of its preparation is no more. The suggestion that I simply switch over to Pet Sounds betrays a fundamental misunderstanding of the Mystery Train demographic. We\u2019re just getting too bloody <em>old<\/em> to care about indie music anymore. Has Tom Dunne played any <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/B00002519C\/qid=1148654631\/sr=8-1\/ref=sr_8_xs_ap_i1_xgl\/203-8519992-8194302\">Blind Willie Johnson <\/a>recently? Any <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/B00022M5DG\/qid=1148654667\/sr=8-1\/ref=sr_8_xs_ap_i1_xgl\/203-8519992-8194302\">Bettye Swann<\/a>? Any <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/B0007XR95Y\/qid=1148654691\/sr=8-1\/ref=sr_8_xs_ap_i1_xgl\/203-8519992-8194302\">Buck Owens<\/a>? Of course not. We\u2019re soon to be a lost tribe, us Mystery Train passengers, vainly wandering up and down the dial in search of the occasional snatch of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B0000032U2\/sr=8-1\/qid=1148654754\/ref=pd_bbs_1\/103-2432798-8011861?%5Fencoding=UTF8\">Lefty Frizell <\/a>or <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B00000JNO0\/sr=8-1\/qid=1148654796\/ref=pd_bbs_1\/103-2432798-8011861?%5Fencoding=UTF8\">Lightnin&#8217; Slim<\/a> (why do they all have such cool names?).<\/p>\n<p>RTE callously<a href=\"http:\/\/www.rte.ie\/radio1\/pressreleases\/1093516.html\"> dispose <\/a>of this abandonment of their neediest listeners with a single sentence: \u201cAfter 7 years, Mystery Train presenter John Kelly has decided to concentrate on other broadcasting commitments???. &#8220;Decided&#8221;? Perhaps, but the tone of the sentence is eerily reminiscent of government announcements that \u201cthe minister has resigned in order to spend more time with his family???. I\u2019m aware that Kelly will be all over the telly, but that\u2019s not really his medium (In any case, he has what\u2019s euphemistically known as a face for radio). He\u2019s at his best playing records by and telling me stories about American musicians with names like <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/B0009OBYZW\/qid=1148655370\/sr=8-1\/ref=sr_8_xs_ap_i1_xgl\/203-8519992-8194302\">Charlie Feathers<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/B000AOF9W0\/qid=1148655397\/sr=8-1\/ref=pd_ka_1\/203-8519992-8194302\">Jelly Roll Morto<\/a>n or <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/B000024IJV\/qid=1148655479\/sr=8-1\/ref=sr_8_xs_ap_i1_xgl\/203-8519992-8194302\">Dr. John, The Night-Tripper<\/a>. Oh, he\u2019s cost me a fortune in CDs that I simply had to buy after hearing tracks played on the show, but that was a cost gladly borne. No price is too great for a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B0002Z9WFC\/sr=8-1\/qid=1148654854\/ref=pd_bbs_1\/103-2432798-8011861?%5Fencoding=UTF8\">Willie Hightower retrospective<\/a>, as I\u2019m sure you\u2019ll all agree. So sure, maybe I\u2019ll save a little money come September, but I\u2019ll be the poorer in more important ways. The Train has left the station.
