{"id":497,"date":"2007-07-25T12:07:58","date_gmt":"2007-07-25T11:07:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.tuppenceworth.ie\/blog\/index.php\/2007\/07\/25\/registering-an-interest\/"},"modified":"2007-07-25T12:07:58","modified_gmt":"2007-07-25T11:07:58","slug":"registering-an-interest","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.tuppenceworth.ie\/blog\/2007\/07\/25\/registering-an-interest\/","title":{"rendered":"Registering an Interest"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The question of a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.independent.ie\/national-news\/mobiles-registry-to-aid-antidrugs-drive-1042583.html\">compulsory register<\/a> of everyone buying (and possibly holding) a mobile phone has been raised again during these quiet summer days by Pat Carey TD, Junior Minister in the Department of Community, Rural and Gaeltacht affairs. <\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ll leave it to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.digitalrights.ie\/2007\/07\/23\/registration-of-mobile-phones\/\">Digital Rights Ireland<\/a> post on this topic, and to <a href=\"http:\/\/obriend.info\/2007\/07\/24\/mobile-phone-registration\/\">Daragh O&#8217;Brien&#8217;s contribution<\/a> from the field of information management, to outline the reasons why this is an idea which ought to be dumped, rather than regularly recycled. <\/p>\n<p>Antoin O&#8217;Lachtnain, who is one of Digital Rights Ireland&#8217;s directors, had <a href=\"http:\/\/www.eire.com\/2007\/07\/23\/government-gets-to-look-silly-on-mobile-phone-registration\/\">this little nugget<\/a> from the Department of Communications, Marine and Natural Resources (who would actually have to mandate such a register) responding to Mr. Carey&#8217;s intellectual eruption. <\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Minister Ryan will be discussing the question of mobile phone registration with Minister of State Carey in the coming weeks.
