Irish Government Lodges Objection to Data Retention Directive with ECJ

I’m sure that the DRI people will be all over this, but I just thought that people might be interested to know that an objection to the Data Retention Directive was lodged today by the Irish Government with the European Court of Justice.

Today was the last possible day to lodge such an objection.

The contents of that objection aren’t clear yet. (Well, not to me anyway.)

UPDATE: More from Digital Rights Ireland on this. They discuss the basis for the Irish Government’s challenge. From what they say, it seems it will be a technical, procedural challenge taken to protect the Irish Veto in decision making in the Council of Ministers, rather than a challenge on the substantive issue of the Directive’s breach of the right to privacy.
